Coaches

Welcome Coaches!

National Junior Basketball League wants to make your experience as a coach a success!

NJB Code of Ethics

We are teachers of basketball. The basketball court is an extension of the player's life. Make basketball fun for everyone.

Basketball is a simple game: It's the coaches that make it complex.

COACHES RESPONSIBILITIES

- Develop a team roster of all players with addresses and phone numbers.
- Turn in rosters to Division Representative the first week in November.
- Develop and maintain a positive rapport with the parents of your players.
- Inform parents about practice times, game times, and other requirements of the program.
Attend all coaches' meetings and clinics, and national clinic.
- Explain the risks and dangers of the athletic activity.
- Be knowledgeable about the latest safety and conditioning techniques.
- Organize, conduct, and supervise all practices and games.
- Secure a team parent.
- Assist in the prevention and care in injuries.
- Report all accidents and complete an injury report on any athlete injured in practice or during a game. Give the report to your insurance representative.
- Emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship and fair play.
- Show cordial courtesy to visiting teams and game officials.

- Remember that an athletic contest is just a game, not a matter of life and death.
- Carry emergency cards for each player during all practices and games.
- All teams are required to obtain a team sponsor.
- Inform players on the danger of drugs.

"All adults should conduct their behavior in a positive fashion". Players are encouraged to "play for the love of the game..." and spectators are reminded to" ...cheer every good play ...recognize the good and never the bad!"

A series of recent incidents throughout the nation prompts me to revisit the basic issue of good sportsmanship.  NJB games are competitive, and that leads to emotional situations that involve coaches, players, referees, and spectators.  Sportsmanship builds character, teaches teamwork  and rewards participation in a great sport.  The Negative impact of such emotions results in confrontation, inappropriate and regretful behavior.

As parents and coaches, we remain role models to our children.  As players and referees, we are participants and guardians of the rules of the game.  Sportsmanship needs to always be the priority and guiding principle in NJB.

Basic elements of sportsmanship include:

- Respect between opposing players and coaches
- Refraining from the use of profanity and inappropriate gestures
- Crowd control
- Proper management of playing facilities
- No bullying or "trash talking" by participants or fans
- Acknowledging the efforts of all referees, scorekeepers, and game management

NJB is committed to the highest level of sportsmanship and fair play.  I encourage you to display good sportsmanship and make it a part of all you do in the NJB experience.
